My thesaurus is messing with me.

I have a thesaurus from 1961. I love it. But it has those irregular pages that some old books have. You know, the ones that feel like ridges and when you flip through them they stick on certain pages bypassing the ones in-between? That kind. It also has the words at the top corner of the page. The ones that show you a word thats on in the page so you can tell when you’ve gone too far.

That’s not unusual. It’s just the words it hesitates on…

Let’s start with;   Ownerless (page 327)     and       Plantation (page 343)

It’s weird. Then again, the other words it turns to aren’t any better…

Devil (123), then Exile (161); Friendliness (189) then God (197).

I’m understandably suspicious but even if my thesaurus is up to something, I can’t for the life of me find the connection between   Poultry (349)   and   Relief (367)…..

Digging through the first weeks

Well school started almost two weeks ago. For a person who’s style of educational success is hit or miss I’ve been doing a lot more missing than hitting lately .
My slow start has much to do with my recent move and with being I’ll for the first week of classes along side medication changes and worries about work.

My question is what does one do to get the ball rolling again?

Apps

Well as you may have guessed I got an iPhone and have been spending the last few weeks arguously sorting through apps.

The first thing I have to say is: what the hell iTunes? Could you make the process of searching for an app that performs a specific function so inefficient and intolerable?

I mean really you can’t search by function and the categories iTunes uses are so ridiculously broad and unhelpful there may as well be none at all.

There is no search feature which lets you browse through just … Let’s say location based Check in apps. No place to have all the different alarm clock apps. Collected in one place so you can look through them and decide which you want.
If you search for alarm clock and buy one of those that comes up, chances are that you might be searching a completely different key word later and find an alarm clock app that (for whatever reason) never showed up at all.

Better yet , if you look on top ten lists you might also come across the best app for something iTunes “helped” you find and buy a far worse app for.

Seriously how much do you have to fail at his before someone makes an app for finding apps and makes he horrible joke that is the app store mildly acceptable.

Does Anyone Else See a Similarity?

While reading through an article for an Art History class I saw these two “lions”.

These are islamic or iberian influenced objects.

Despite the fact that I am just now dipping my toes in the waters of islamic and medeterranean art of the 10th to 12th centuries my reaction was;

“That’s so familiar! Where have I seen that before?”

Then it hit me…

Strangers

Every once in a while I remember that I have all my privacy settings basically turned off and I think huh, that’s right strangers have read this. Before Tumblr I just assumed no one bothered to read it.

Now I know better.

Now I think Huh these people must be either very bored or very confused. I should learn to write more clearly and for a broader audience than  just Michael.

And then I remember to forget about it and be lazy any way.

The End

I get the Gist.

When I first logged on to Gist I was expecting another aggregating dissapointment.  However after adding my contacts from my email accounts, facebook, twitter and my computer’s address book  I was delighted.

Gist showed me what sites my contacts had accounts on, showed me a feed of thier posts, and gave me surprisingly accurate suggestions for additional information.

I found twitter accounts for old friends, and emails that I hadn’t know existed.

However, despite the wonderful  success of all of this  there is much left to be desired.

For example there is no way to quickly view a list of contacts that gist has suggested information for. There is no way to quickly go through a list of names and suggestions. There is only a notification bar that gives you four or five links to contacts that gist has suggested information for. It’s maddening.

Another irritating feature that gist is desperately in need of…ranking based on facebook and twitter interaction not simply number of email communications.

Wisconsin Death Trip

Black and white images, especially when juxtaposed with color images for the purpose of seperating historical events from current events, give a sense of factuality and finality.

The things depicted in black and white seemed more disturbing, bizarre and real to me in part because of the  ”here is a picture, here is a record of it, this event really happened” presentation. The image of a letterpress stamping the headlines onto a page, the finality of the “ca-chunk” as the lever is pulled, the stark black and white typeface make me feel like this is something more distant and strange than it really is.

Even though the color images of the modern day town sometimes told stories every bit as depressing as those in black and white,  in my mind I felt that the things that happened then were things from long ago that had more to do with the time than humanity itself.

And yet thinking back on the radio broadcasts from the modern day town terrible things still happened. There were still murders, drunkenness, youngsters partying, sick old people. The difference wasn’t just how graphically the headlines were illustrated or how much of the actual horror was shown; it wasn’t the caliber of single acts, although the quantity of examples shown for the past versus the amount shown in the present  may have contributed.

The reason the past seemed so much more horrible was the strange finality of it and the distance between then and now.

The present atrocities were told in soundbites, radio broadcasts, bits of stories told by people who look and act much more like you and I. The images were related but indirect. The color itself seemed to act as veil, hiding the actualities of the modern world beneath the more familiar medium.

Swackett. My new favorite thing

What is Swackett?

Swackett is an app for your mac.

More specifically it’s a app that makes checking the weather and dressing accordingly entertaining enough that even I might actually do it.

The different versions are fun, and the easter eggs like what to wear if goth or surprise pop culture references will keep you using the app.

But the best part of this app is that the useful features are all in the basics.

And believe me this app has covered it’s bases.

Quickly and easily move through the current forecast, the days high, the night’s low and even take a quick peek at whats around the corner tomorrow.

Never worry about forgetting a sweater or umbrella again? Maybe not but it sure evens the playing field.

The second window breaks down the days weather nearly hour by hour.

And all with easy to read information and easy to understand images that are great for kids. And let’s be honest they are adorable.

Click once on any box to get more detailed weather information.

The next window breaks down the weather for the coming week.

The last window gives a more real world view of the situation with animated, up to date radar images.

And as if they really needed to give us any more useful features there is the button for Warnings at the bottom of the page. One click brings up a color coded map of the nations weather warnings. click on your state of interest to get a full break down including lists of affected communities.

Let me just say that although there is a free version…. I bought the paid version.

Because really I think we have all paid way more than two dollars for some ***t that’s much less practical and far less polished.

What do you do with Dead Alewives?

What has everyone else on Lake Michigan been doing with all of the dead alewives that wash up on the beach in front of thier house?

I’ve seen a few people rake then up into piles. But after that?

Do you bury them?

(That’s what we ended up doing)

Do you wait for them to wash away, compost them, burn them, put them in the trash?

You say you couldn’t live with it
That I am more important
Is this simply because I live and breathe
Because guilt is drilled into us young
I am one you have shared all your secrets with
Enough?
But did you tell me then
The love that lacked
The luster lost?
Where were your words, those saturdays.
How much can one mean who is only worth while in the moment or worse in the mind.
Feigning love for something you have not held in that highest of esteems.
He who sews the seeds of doubt knows not what bounty he shall reap

Edit: This does not count as boy problems. Just learning.

This week I have learned….

It may be impossible to have male friends and a boyfriend at the same time without everything going wrong, them hating each other, and everyone walking on egg shells. At the very least they cannot be socialised together.

Do we really need chastity belts just to make everyone feel all better and safe.

Jealousy is like romances version of a nuclear bomb.

You really can’t defend yourself against it and it can destroy everything in it’s wake.

Also like nuclear bombs there is more than enough jealousy  out there to end the world.

…and cockroaches are immune as they are so ugly they can’t even be jealous of each other.

Having gone to OCHSA  may mean you missed out on learning what normal people do and don’t do in  relationships.

For example the idea that you should not date the ex of a friend is not only a foreign concept, it’s pretty much the opposite of what OCHSA kids actually do.

Finding a One West Bank is much like; an easter egg hunt for green easter eggs in green grass while wearing green-tinted glasses, a dense rock, locking your keys in your car while handcuffed to the door handle, linear algebra, and figuring out how to removed a barbed arrow from your hand.

If you don’t type “onewest” into the Verizon Navigator and instead type “one west” they will tell you to go twenty miles or more to find one.  What you find when you get there will be anything but a One West bank.

Ten Reasons Why I Need a Backpack Purse

1. Running with an over the shoulder purse is awkward.
My purse is always falling off.
2. Running with an over the shoulder purse looks awkward.
I have to hold it against me to keep it from flapping.
3. Over the shoulder purses make one shoulder sore while backpacks distribute unreasonably large purse weights evenly.
4. One shoulder tanlines …enough said.
5. Can hold books without them hitting me in the side and ribs with the sharp corners.
6. Avoids having arms held up like a raptors to keep purse from slipping and dropping everything.
7. Leather backpacks are generally awesome and make me feel like an adventurer.
8. Both hands are free
9.Can be easily hung on back of chairs. One strap over each corner of the chair back.
1O. Leather backpacks are allowed to look beat up. Leather purses not so much
